Carbomer 940 polymer is a white powder, crosslinked polyacrylic acid polymer. It is an extremely efficient rheology modifier capable of providing high viscosity and forms sparkling clear gels or hydro-alcoholic gels and creams. Its short flow, non-drip properties are ideal for applications such as clear gels, hydroalcholic gels, and creams.
Carbomer 940 is most commonly used in hand sanitizer formulas made of water and a high alcohol content up to 90%. Recommended use for hand sanitizers is .025% to .1% with best result at .05% (5 grams per liter) which will make a jell thick enough to stand without flowing. For Carbomer 940 to work properly you must balance the PH between 5.5 to 7. Balancing the PH to thicken the jell, should be the final step in the process of your formula.
Carbomer 940 is best balanced with Triethanolamine (TEA or TEOA) - 99% (Density: 1.13 g/cm³). Mix ratio should be 1.5 grams of TEA to 1 gram of Carbomer 940. The TEA should be diluted to 10% solution in distilled water before adding to the mix in the final step.
Carbopol 940 is an easy to use water soluble polymer, used as an emulsifying, stabilizing, suspending, thickening and gelling agent, widely used in many applications due to its versatility and safety. Widely used thickener.
Carbopol 940 polymer thickener is a cross-linked polyacrylate polymer. It is a very efficient thickener (rheology modifier) providing high viscosity and clear water or hydroalcoholic for making a variety of gels and creams.
Application:
Carbomer should be added to the liquid slowly through a shifting screen while stirring the mixture. The mixture should be stirred for at least 2 hours to allow the polymer to fully hydrate. After the base is added and mixed to adjust the PH, the mixture will continue to improve in clarity over the next day. Distilled or deionized water should be used for maximum clarity.
