The Below Information Has Been Provided From Our Gun Caliber Dictionary And Is Meant For Informational Purposes Only. It Is Not Intended to Describe The Unique Specifications For This Ammunition.
The 22 Long was developed as a blackpowder cartridge in 1871, 15 years before the much more popular 22 Long Rifle. It uses the same light 29-grain bullet as the 22 Short, but has the same .613-inch case length as the 22 Long Rifle. Velocity with its 29-grain bullet is a fairly speedy 1215 feet per second. Although still manufactured the 22 Long is not nearly as popular as either the Short or Long Rifle and should not be confused with either. It can be chambered and safely fired in any firearm chambered for 22 Long Rifle, but is unlikely to function in semiautomatics and may not cycle through other repeating actions. —
